Bizarre doll-like sculptures

Sculptures by Finnish artist KIM SIMONSSON (b. 1974). Simonsson’s sculptures of animals and children are nearly life-sized, and are influenced by the imagery of Japanese manga comics. The doll-like ceramic figures portray the anxiety under the surface cuteness and probably wouldn’t have been amongst your grandma’s china cabinet. Simonsson uses clay and glass for his sculptures and won one of the most prestigious Finnish awards; the Young Artist of The Year Award in 2004. He graduated with a master of Arts in 2000 from the University of Arts and Design, Helsinki. WAS has an exhibition with the Finnish artist starting today Sept.18th. On sunday the 20th you can meet the artist for an Artist Talk at WAS at 13.00 o’clock during the Kopenhagen Contemporary Art Weekend.
Previously, Simonsson has had solo exhibitions at the Nacny Margolis Gallery, NYC and at Galleria Heino, ARCO08, Madrid, Spain to name a couple.
