Theatrical paper cut Warriors

Armenian artist living in Amsterdam,KAREN SARGSYAN, is behind these figurative paper-cut sculptures. The sculptures were recently showcased @ the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in New York. The sculptures are quite theatrical, many of the figures are engaged in some sort of dramatic gesture suggesting movement, yet frozen in time and space. The faces on the figures suggest some sort of feeling and pain, however in a humorous way. The artist won Netherlands’s prestigious Thieme Art Award in 2007. The artist used to work with clay but then moved on to paper. Sargsyans’ choice of material obviously raises questions about durability of his sculptures, since paper degrade over time. But he uses a special kind of heavy paper and believes that the sculptures can last forever. To read a review about the artist in NEW YORK TIMES click here. Via beautifuldecay.
